Indian Harbour Beach

Indian Harbour Beach, located in central Brevard County, has a pretty interesting history and yet is still growing and evolving.

The town was initially inhabited by the Ais tribe who were skilled hunters and fishermen and also knew how to grow crops in the sandy soil and tropical climate. Living in villages along the rivers and the coast, they used canoes to travel and traded with other tribes which allowed them to thrive. While they were well adjusted for survival, they also had an intricate social structure and a rich cultural heritage. They were known for their elaborate ceremonies and rituals, many of which were tied to their belief in the spiritual world. Sadly, like many Native American tribes, the Ais were greatly affected by the arrival of Europeans. Their population declined due to disease and conflict, and their way of life was disrupted. However, their legacy lives on in places like Indian Harbour Beach as a reminder of the rich history that lies beneath the surface of this beautiful coastal town.

The early settlers of Indian Harbour Beach were a pretty interesting bunch. They were a mix of adventurous souls and hard-working folks who were looking for a fresh start. Among them were farmers, fishermen, and tradespeople all of whom contributed to the growth and development of the town. They built homes, businesses, and community spaces, and they worked together to create a place that was welcoming and full of life. From 1900 to 1955, Indian Harbour Beach was a place of growth and change. While the town was primarily a farming and fishing community, it slowly took shape into the charming coastal town that it is today thanks to the hard work and vision of its early residents. During this time, the residents were a mix of Native Americans, settlers, and newcomers.

The modern history of Indian Harbour Beach really started in the early 20th century when it was officially founded by William J. Gleason in 1955. Gleason, who was a real estate developer, had a vision for a residential community that would be a little paradise by the sea, a place where people could live in harmony with nature and enjoy a relaxed, coastal lifestyle.  While relaxation was paramount he also wanted to fester a touch of adventure and exploration and achieved this by naming the streets after famous aviators and explorers, like Ponce de Leon and Columbus. He worked hard to develop the area, building homes, businesses, and community spaces.

Over the years, Indian Harbour Beach has developed into a charming coastal town known for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle. It's a place where you can enjoy a quiet stroll by the sea, just sit back and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean, or watch the frequent rocket launches right from your front porch or backyard!

Indian Harbour Beach is a lovely community to raise your children or live out our Golden Years. Definitely check it out!
