Moving along north on our journey, we come to the famous city of Cocoa!!

Cocoa, Florida, is a picturesque town situated in Brevard County, snuggled comfortably along the Indian River Lagoon. This charming place was originally known as Indian River City. The city underwent a name change in 1895. The inspiration for the new name, "Cocoa," came from the abundance of cocoa trees that once flourished in the area. Its legacy now lives on in the rich history of the town with the Indian River Queen, a modern-day paddleboat that offers sightseeing tours and private charters along the Indian River Lagoon. While it may share a similar name and concept with the Indian River Steamboat Company, it is not a direct continuation of the original company. The Indian River Queen is operated by a separate entity and serves as a modern tribute to the steamboat legacy that once thrived in the area.

By the early 1900s, Cocoa had become a bustling hub for agriculture, with citrus fruits, pineapples, and of course, cocoa, being the major crops. The town also saw the rise of the lumber industry, thanks to the abundance of pine trees in the area.

Cocoa's strategic location played a crucial role during World War II, as it served as a training ground for the U.S. Navy. The Naval Air Station Banana River was established in 1940, and it played a vital part in training pilots and aircrew members for the war effort. The station was eventually decommissioned in 1947, but its historical significance remains etched in the town's legacy.
