Satellite Beach & South Patrick Shores

Today we'll explore the histories of both Satellite Beach and South Patrick Shore, lovely beach towns located just south of Patrick SFB.

First let's look at how Satellite Beach came to be and how it got  its name. This charming coastal town got its name from the space boom in the 1950s. The town of Satellite Beach was named by Dr. Roy C. Amara, who was a top executive at the aerospace company, Pan American World Airways. He named the town in 1957, inspired by the town's role in satellite manufacturing during the space race. Dr. Amara wanted the town's name to reflect its unique contribution to the field of aerospace technology. The area was bustling with engineers and scientists working on cutting-edge technology. The town took pride in its contribution to the space program.

Satellite Beach was a hub for satellite manufacturing from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. This was the height of the space race, and Satellite Beach was right in the middle of it all. As the space program slowed down in the 1970s, so did the town's role in satellite manufacturing. Over time, Satellite Beach transitioned into a residential town, with its focus shifting from satellite production to providing a peaceful, beachside lifestyle.

At the same time, South Patrick Shores, another charming beach community, has a history that's deeply intertwined with the growth of the space industry. The area was initially part of the town of Satellite Beach and was developed in the 1950s by a Chicago businessman, William H. Patrick who saw potential in the beautiful coastline. He envisioned a residential community that would cater to those engineers and scientists working at the nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The town grew rapidly, thanks to its proximity to the space center and its beautiful beachfront properties. However, as the community grew, the residents of South Patrick Shores decided to form their own municipality. They wanted to have more control over local decisions and to maintain the unique character of their community. So, in 1957, South Patrick Shores officially became a separate municipality from Satellite Beach.

Today, both towns stand as proud symbols of the exciting era of space exploration and the growth of residential communities in Florida. These communities are peaceful places with beautiful beaches and rich history. They are great spots to soak up the sun, enjoy the ocean, learn about the exciting history of space exploration, and have unobstructed views of spectacular launches from Cape Canaveral! Come check them out!!
